We are currently recruiting Field Research Assistants for our client in Ardossan, Alberta. This position requires traveling to different sites across central Alberta. This is a 6–7-month contract from April to November. The shift runs from Monday to Friday with hours from 8am-4pm plus overtime on evenings and weekends.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Seed organization and set up 
  • Operating farm equipment  
  • Field preparation, seeding, spraying, plot maintenance, and harvesting 
  • Greenhouse work on canola breeding projects; planting, crossing, harvest, threshing, and cataloguing 
  • Scouting and identifying agronomic issues relating to the canola crop; diseases, insects, weeds, and other environmental conditions 
  • Ensuring field locations are weed and pest free, maintaining a site visit schedule 
  • Conducting location reports and logs of research sites 
  • Data collection, plot and disease rating, data organization and entry 

The successful candidate will have the following experience: 

  • Enrolled in an Undergrad or Diploma in Agriculture, Biology, or related field 
  • Experience operating farming equipment  
  • Previous agriculture, field crop, or plot research experience 
  • Ability to work extended hours in an outdoor field environment or Greenhouse  
  • Drivers License required as successful candidate will be required to drive leased vehicle between sites 
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner, at times unsupervised 
  • Physically able to efficiently perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and field walks 
  • Computer skills (MS excel) 
  • Steel toed ankle high shoes/boots required 
  • Ability to pass a fit test  
  • Must be able to pass drug and criminal record checks  
  • Must be able to provide a clean drivers abstract  
  • Able to be exposed to pollen, insects and bees  

Pay Rate: $18 – $23/hr
